Historic Sites on Tour this Year:
Lee-Fendall House
The Lee-Fendall House, built in 1785, served as home to 37 members of the Lee family. Labor leader John L. Lewis also made this his home during the height of his power, 1937 to 1969. This year, guests are invited to celebrate a traditional Early Victorian Christmas with some modern flair. The Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden will feature holiday music from Steve Hung, instrumental acoustic guitarist, on Saturday and a capella group Tonic & Gin on Sunday . Greenery will be hung in seasonal displays and the Christmas tree will be trimmed with ribbons, antique toys, and gilded ornaments in the style of the 1850s. Guides will explain early Victorian holiday customs and tell of famous visitors to the historic home such as "Light Horse" Harry Lee, the Washingtons, and John Quincy Adams.
Carlyle House Historic Park
Step back in time as you enter the candlelit 1753 home of John Carlyle. During the Christmas season, Virginian planters and merchants like Carlyle would enjoy festive entertainments to ward off the cold winter air. This season, in 1761, the Carlyles are celebrating the marriage of John Carlyle and Sybil West. Candles will grandly illuminate the house and reveal a beautifully appointed dining table displaying a fine queensware dessert service. Musical entertainment from Potomac Falls and hot apple cider will add to the ambience of the evening.
Gadsby's Tavern Museum
The warm hospitality of the tavern will be enhanced by the scent of fresh greens and flickering candlelight - true holiday ambiance. As you tour the ca. 1785 tavern and 1792 City Tavern, known as Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, you will be greeted by costumed guides who will highlight the visits of our founding fathers and every day travelers. A highlight of your visit will include enjoying 18th century music and dancing in the same room where George and Martha Washington danced.
Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum
This apothecary business attended to the health of Alexandria residents and travelers from 1796 until 1933. Tour this historic Alexandria business while learning about “cures” for a variety of seasonal ailments.
