The staff of The Lyceum is small, yet we offer many activities and
programs that enable the public to enjoy Alexandria's history. Many
of these activities are volunteer-staffed--can you help us?
- Visitor Services volunteers staff the
front desk of The Lyceum and provide basic greeting and orientation to our
guests. On different days this might involve discussing the exhibitions,
answering questions, giving directions, offering restaurant and shopping
suggestions and taking phone messages for other staff members.
- Museum Shop volunteers assist visitors in
the Shop. The" Lyceum Museum Shop is
well-stocked with a variety of merchandise that is fun, educational,
and beautiful.
- Collections Care and Research volunteers
assist The Lyceum's Curator in developing new exhibitions and maintaining the collection of more than 1,500 objects. They
also conduct independent research projects.
- Docents are volunteers who help with The
Lyceum's School Programs, primarily
held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Kids love to get out of the
classroom to learn something new and docents are the people who help
them have fun while they're here.
- Alexandria Legacies is an oral history
project that collects the memories of city residents. Volunteers can
interview or videotape subjects, produce transcripts, or provide many
other related services.
- Volunteers are also needed to help with The
Lyceum's quarterly newsletter, The Alexandria Observer,
by writing or editing articles, and taking photographs.
If you can help us with any of these activities, please
call The Lyceum at 703-838-4994, or fill out the on-line Volunteer Application. Keep
in mind, there are similar opportunities awaiting you at many other sites
in historic Alexandria, such as Fort Ward Museum, Alexandria Archaeology,
Gadsby's Tavern Museum and the Alexandria Black History Resource
Center.
