Learning Opportunities for Grades K–6 in Historic Alexandria

These programs are designed to enhance student learning and are adaptable to the Virginia and Maryland learning objectives.


  • Inside Old Town
    Virginia SOLs: 3.7-9, 3.12, VS.1-4, USI.1-3

    Explore Old Town in this two-part program. Find out about the lives of people who resided in this growing port city over 200 years ago. Learn how their skills and trades helped it to grow with our classroom outreach kit and interactive walking tour.

    Program: 1 ¾ hours (walking tour)
    Grades: 3 – 5
    Recommended Group Size: Up to 48 students
    Chaperones: One chaperone required per 10 to 12 students

The outreach kit can be used as preparation for a site visit, or can stand alone as an in-class series of lessons. A variety of hands-on objects, reproducible period documents and maps, a tray of historic site slides, and an accompanying teacher's manual give educators many options.

 

  • Getting a Feel for Long Ago
    Virginia SOLs: K.1, K.2, K.6-8, 1.1, 2.7-9

    The Lyceum provides the setting for this hands-on history program. Students will explore object reproductions used in work and home in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

    Program: 1 ¼ hours
    Grades: K – 3
    Recommended Group Size: Up to 48 students
    Chaperones: One chaperone required per 10 to 12 students

A variety of reproduction objects let children explore history "first hand," and introduce them to Early American products, trades and daily life.

 

  • Scavenger Hunt for History
    Virginia SOLs: VS.1-2, VS.6-9, USI.1, USI.3

    The Lyceum Museum is the setting for students to explore and discover Alexandria’s past. Using clue sheets they will find objects that played a role in the growth of the City founded in 1749.

    Program: 1 ¼ hours
    Grades: 3 – 6
    Recommended Group Size: Up to 48 students
    Chaperones: One chaperone required per 10 to 12 students

The Lyceum's programs can be combined with programs offered by Alexandria's other museums and historic sites.
