 The Lyceum Company |
The Alexandria Lyceum (later The Lyceum Company) was originally formed
in 1834 to foster the spread of knowledge by making lectures, debates,
experiments and other educational activities available to the general
public. In 1839, The Lyceum joined with The Alexandria Library Company
to build a new cultural center that both would share, the building that
today is The Lyceum, Alexandria's History Museum.
Following almost 125 years of inactivity, The Alexandria Lyceum was
recreated in 1983 as the Lyceum Company, with the mission to "directly
promote the historical, educational, and interpretive activities of the
Lyceum." Todays Lyceum Company is a non-profit membership and support
group for the museum, holding events that help to raise the profile
of The Lyceum in the community, and at the same time help to raise
funds for special museum projects. For example, Lyceum Company funds
have purchased computer equipment and assisted with the production of
a major silver exhibition. The Lyceum Company is guided by its officers
and a Board of Directors.
