Promoting the event and your participation

Upcoming living history program
Engineers
Units can be highlighted in advance publicity when they register to participate before media deadlines.

A concerted effort is made to promote Fort Ward’s programs to the public. Publicity can appear in:

  • promotional brochures/flyers produced by Fort Ward Museum
  • guidebooks
  • calendars of events prepared by tourism agencies
  • local and regional newspapers
  • local and regional magazines
  • Fort Ward and Office of Historic Alexandria websites
  • travel websites
  • Civil War interest magazines
  • Civil War interest websites, including Virginia Civil War Trails
  • radio and television public service announcements
  • radio and television feature segments
Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln and his entourage are always crowd pleasers when they visit Fort Ward Museum.

Advance publicity, often issued six months or more before a program occurs, can be crucial in highlighting the event itself and your unit’s participation. Fort Ward’s staff works with media relations professionals to get the word out on Museum programs. The sooner your unit commits to a program date, or can provide details about a program activity, the more publicity will be generated. Although there are no guarantees when working with the media, experience shows that a concise, well-crafted press release, plus quality promotional photographs, can catch an editor’s eye, especially when on deadline.
