Military and civilian reenactors will interpret army life in Union and Confederate camps at Fort Ward Museum’s annual Civil War Camp Day on Saturday, May 31.  This is the largest Civil War living history event of the year at the Alexandria museum and historic site.

Visitors can observe firing demonstrations, a bayonet exercise, skirmish drills, camp cooking demonstrations, a camp laundress at work, and U.S. Sanitary Commission and medical impressions as staged by the 3rd U.S. Regular Infantry, Co. D. The 5th New York Volunteer Infantry, known as Duryee’s Zouaves, will demonstrate the Zouave bayonet drill and educate visitors about the history of Zouave regiments and their colorful uniforms. In the fort, the 1st U.S. Artillery, Co. D, will perform artillery presentations and display artillery tools and equipment.

The 17th Virginia Infantry, Co. D, also known as the “Fairfax Rifles,” will offer Confederate drill and firing demonstrations, a paymaster impression, and civilians depicting everyday 19th-century activities such as wool carding and butter churning. A member of the Fairfax Rifles will also give a presentation on Civil War railroads.

In addition, the Victorian Dance Ensemble will demonstrate 19th-century dances, and then will invite public participation. Also, a 19th-century schoolmarm will be on hand to share popular toys and activities for youngsters of that time. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about life in the Officers’ Hut, and in Union and Confederate camps.

Activities run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and there is a suggested donation of $2 per adult and $1 per child.

Fort Ward is the best-preserved fortification in the Defenses of Washington, which were built to protect the Union capital during the Civil War. The museum offers changing exhibits, tours, lectures, and interpretive programs throughout the year. Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site is located at 4301 West Braddock Road.
