The
site of the first Alexandria railroad roundhouse, this development
provided the opportunity for archaeologists to research
the Orange and Alexandria Railroad as well as the effects
of the Civil War. Captured by Union troops in order to provide
a supply hub for the southern campaign, the blocks around
the roundhouse were enclosed with a wood palisade for the
United States Military Railroad. The foundations of the
home used by the Union as a hospital and a massive octagon-shape
privy were discovered. The excellent preservation in the
water-logged privy permitted the recover of leather boots,
horse crop, food remains and hundreds of ceramic and glass
artifacts associated with the Civil War soldiers.
