Redevelopment
of the area along their old railroad right-of-way prompted
Norfolk Southern Properties to contract Engineering-Science
Inc. to investigate the parcel near Duke Street and Holland
Lane. In addition to documenting domestic and industrial
contexts, the Hoofs Run Bridge, a stone bridge from
the Alexandria & Orange Railroad and the oldest bridge
in Alexandria, was preserved. Also preserved, under Duke
Street, is the beer cellar of the first lager brewery in
Virginia (1858-1893).
