Jones Point Trek

10. Keith's Wharf
Keith's Wharf was built at the foot of Franklin Street, just north of Jones Point, in the 1780s by merchants hoping to increase commerce. The street measured 100 feet, wider than the standard 66 feet, to accommodate the expected traffic. This Civil War era photograph shows a railspur to the wharf. Archaeological excavations at Ford's Landing discovered a 400-foot-long shipway, a marine railway, wharf bulkheads, hulls of cargo vessels, barges, and a bateau. They survive intact under the new townhouses. Historic markers line the river-front walk at Ford's Landing.
