10. Keith's Wharf
Keith's Wharf was built at the foot of Franklin Street, just north of
Jones Point, in the 1780s by merchants hoping to increase commerce.
The street measured 100 feet, wider than the standard 66 feet, to accommodate
the expected traffic. This Civil War era photograph shows a railspur
to the wharf. Archaeological excavations at Ford's Landing discovered
a 400-foot-long shipway, a marine railway, wharf bulkheads, hulls of
cargo vessels, barges, and a bateau. They survive intact under the new
townhouses. Historic markers line the river-front walk at Ford's Landing.
