11. Battery Rogers
One of the Civil War Defenses which protected Washington, Battery Rodgers, was constructed by federal troops in 1863 on a 28-foot-high bluff over Battery Cove to guard the southern Potomac River and Accotink Road (Fort Hunt Rd.) approaches to the Capitol. The Battery had two powder magazines, five Parrott artillery pieces and one 15-inch Rodman gun (now at Fort Foote across the river). The complex included a hospital, barracks, mess hall, and prison west of Lee Street (shown as Water Street on the map). The Civil War Quartermaster Map shows the outline of these structures. A marker at the south end of Lee Street indicates its location.
