Other Ways to Experience Archaeology in Alexandria
Activities
- Archaeology" Adventure Lessons
These hands-on group activities, held at the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, can be scheduled for
school classes, scout groups, birthdays, summer camps, adult and senior groups.
- Summer Camp
Summer Camp provides an opportunity for students, ages 12-15, to work directly with City
Archaeologists to excavate an historic site in Alexandria, Virginia.
- Field School
The Summer Session in Historical Archaeology is a two-week college course offered by Alexandria
Archaeology and The George Washington University.
- Family Dig Days
Participants of all ages tour an archaeological site and then help the City Archaeologists screen
the excavated dirt for artifacts.
- Archaeological Site Tours
The public is invited to observe archaeologists at work, and to learn first-hand the steps to excavating a site.
Special Events
- Alexandria Archaeology and the Friends
of Alexandria Archaeology participate in many special events held
throughout the year. These are a few events which are held annually. Look
at our Calendar of Events for an up-to-date
schedule of these and other Archaeology events.
- The George Washington Birthday
Parade
The largest parade in the world honoring our first
president is held in Alexandria, on the Presidents Day holiday in
February. Join us as we march through the streets of Old Town as
"Archaeologists at Work."

Virginia Archaeology Month
Celebrate each October with a
variety of activities, including Archaeological Site Tours, Archaeology
Adventure Lessons, and Public Dig Days.
- Artifact Ornament Decorating Workshop
Join us in the
Museum on the first Saturday in December, after the Christmas Walk, to
decorate dough ornaments shaped like artifacts from the Museums
collection.
