The Public is invited to Dig Alexandria!

Kids Digging

Participants receive a tour of the Shuter’s Hill site and its history, and then help City Archaeologists screen excavated dirt for artifacts.

Individuals and families are welcome. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a participating adult. Sessions run for an hour and a half and cost $5.00 per person.

Reservations Are Required

To accommodate the large demand for this popular program, the following policy has been established:

  • Advanced Reservations may be made with receipt of the full non-refundable payment ($5.00 per person) for your selected session. Some sessions may already be filled, so you may want to call to check availability before mailing your reservation to:

There is a 1 ½ hour session from 1:30 to 3:00 pm on each Saturday listed. Space is limited, and reservations are required.

Guided Site Tours

The public is invited to observe archaeologists at work on the Shuter’s Hill site, and to learn first-hand the steps to excavating a site. Meet the City Archaeologists and trained volunteers for one-hour guided tours. Learn about the site’s history and the artifacts. Site tours are free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Call 703/838-4399 to sign up.
