2007 Excavation Site Photo Gallery

May | June"

In May, a team of archaeologists began their work at Freedmen’s Cemetery. Although they are excavating the site, they are not disturbing any graves. Their investigation will help determine how many graves still remain and where they are.

Archaeologist Fran Bromberg (l) takes Lillie Finklea (r) on a tour of the archaeological work at the Freedmen's Cemetery site. Ms. Finklea is the co-founder of the Friends of Freedmen's Cemetery.

Archaeologists measure the trenches and record where key features are found. In the first week of work, several grave sites were identified in this trench.

Another archaeologist carefully examines the soil, looking for variations in soil color and composition that could indicate the presence of a grave.

Students in The George Washington University Field School are involved in many aspects of the excavation. Using trowels, they slowly remove layers of soil. Soil removed from the trench is taken to a screening area where artifacts are recovered.
